Tyler Brandt was a highly respected wrestling coach and the news of his sudden death was shared on Facebook on Sunday, April 16th, 2023. The wrestling community not only in America but throughout the world is mourning his loss. Although the actual cause of his death is unknown, what is certain is that Coach Brandt was a force to be reckoned with when it came to wrestling.
Coach Brandt was highly educated with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Iowa State University in 1993 and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Pittsburg State University in 1994. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Education from Ottawa University in 1996. His success was not limited to academics as he was also a skilled athlete himself. In high school, he earned All-State honors in all four sports and served as team captain in three. Prior to his graduation from Iowa State University, Coach Brandt played football, baseball, and wrestling in junior college.
Coach Brandt’s passion for wrestling was evident in his work as a coach. He served as an assistant coach at Pittsburg State University from 1994-1996, head wrestling coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School from 1996-1998, and then returned to his alma mater, Iowa State University, as an assistant wrestling coach from 1998-2006. He was also the head coach for the USA freestyle wrestling team at the 2017 World Championships. His dedication and hard work resulted in his wrestlers winning countless matches, earning accolades, and securing scholarships.

This one is hard! 🥲 He was My sons football coach, he was a friend to me and many in our community. More than that, he was a father figure to many of the young men on the football team, my son included, he taught them leadership, strength, morals and values, positivity, not only on the field, but off the field as well. He taught them to be good people, he was always there to help. There were many times I called him to see if he could come and talk with me and my son about a life situation and he would be there.
